Installing the Java Virtual Machine (JVM)

The Flight Trainer requires that JVM v1.4 or higher is installed on your computer.

One of the Flight Trainer installers includes a copy of the 1.4 version of the JVM.  If the Flight Trainer installs a copy of the JVM, it is only available to the Flight Trainer.  During the Flight Trainer's installation, the installer detects of the required version of the JVM is install:

  1. If it is, the Flight Trainer uses that version..
  2. If not, the Flight Trainer installs its own version

Another version of the Flight Trainer installer does not include the JVM.  By installing the latest version of the JVM available to your computer yourself,  your browser(s) and other Java applications will be using the most current JVM.

Determing which JVM is installed

If you are unsure what version of the JVM is installed on your Windows computer, you have three ways to determine it:

  1. From Start Õ Control Panel Õ Add or Remove Programs, scroll down to see if a Java line is shown. e.g.

     

     If you see an entry like this, with v1.4 or higher shown, you are ready to install the Flight Trainer.

  2. From the Microsoft Internet Explorer Õ ToolsÕ Internet Options  Õ Advanced scroll down to see if the Java (Sun) entry is shown, e.g.



    If you see an entry like this, with v1.4 or higher shown, you are ready to install the Flight Trainer.
     
  3. You can click on
      which will tell you if you have the latest version and if not, will give you the option of installing it.

Installing the latest JVM

We recommend that you install the most current version of the JVM from Sun.  Click on this
            and follow the instructions.  This download is approximately 9.9MB.
